This past month, television media and marketing maven, Amira Onibudo ’13, returned to her alma mater to host the Television & Digital Media Panel Discussion & Networking Event for current Bloomfield College students.

“I am the founder of an amazing inspirational blog, Unleashyourself.org,” added Onibudo. “Through my platform I am able to provide career advice and motivational content to uplift college students who are trying to overcome fear and fulfill their dreams.”

Bloomfield College students had the opportunity to network with industry professionals, participate in mock interviews, receive resume critiques, and learn about internship and job opportunities in the fields they wish to pursue following graduation.

The panel consisted of successful women in Broadcast Journalism Onibudo has connected with through working in television including Rana Campbell, host of the podcast Dreams In Drive; Nia Warfield, News Associate with CNBC; Sandra Joseph of Emerging Media and MTV; and Erika Santoro, Associate Producer at CNBC.com.

The event was a great success, with students and faculty packing into Deacon’s Den. The panelists remained at campus well past the event’s scheduled end-time, making sure to speak with every single student who wanted one-on-one guidance. Business cards, resumes, and smiles were passed around diligently.

"The Television and Digital Media Panel event at Bloomfield College was amazing,” said Yuritza Arroyo ’16. “The panelists were all very knowledgeable in every aspect of television and digital media; from how to enter the field to becoming successful. By far the best panel and event I have attended so far. The panelists were friendly and seemed like they wanted to be there and share their wisdom."

“This panel and event was at the professional level of panels I’ve attended at well-known conferences,” said Dr. Jeanne Nutter, Professor of Communication and Coordinator of the Communication Concentration. “The fact that we had something of such high caliber here, at Bloomfield College, is simply amazing. This was invaluable to our students.”

Dr. Nutter had nothing but wonderful things to say about Onibudo, her former student.

Onibudo, who was born and raised in Bloomfield, studied Broadcast Journalism at Bloomfield College, was WBCR Radio host and manager, a member of the Honors Program, and the President and reporter of Bloombox TV, the College’s TV station.

“I learned the importance of networking with industry leaders and making connections with them while at Bloomfield College,” said the former McNair Scholar, who noted that is what inspired her to hold a panel at the College. “Exposing college students to essential tools they need before entering the work place is so crucial for their success.”

As a student, Onibudo stacked her resume with impressive internships with New Jersey News 23, MTV, and VH1. VH1 offered Onibudo her first full-time job one week before she graduated from Bloomfield College.

Onibudo, who currently works in video post-production at Refinery29 and as an Assignment Editor with News 12 New Jersey, earned a Master’s Degree in Strategic Communications from Seton Hall University in May 2016.

The event was sponsored by Unleashyourself.org, the Bloomfield College Center for Career Development, the Bloomfield College Broadcast Journalism Department, and REH.

Both Dr. Nutter and Onibudo look forward to collaborating again in the future.
